(The Post News)- South Africa has launched the Border Management and Immigration Anti-Corruption Forum, a significant move in the country’s fight against corruption. This initiative aims to tackle pervasive corruption within key government sectors, particularly Home Affairs and Border Management.
Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Njabulo Nzuza emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that “corruption is a scourge that has infiltrated every part of our society.” The term “state capture” defined the last decade of South African governance, exposing deep-rooted corruption that reached the highest levels of political power.
The event highlighted alarming issues facing the nation, including extortion, fraud, and the emergence of criminal syndicates. Dr. Cassius Lubisi, former Director-General in the Presidency, noted that sophisticated syndicates have exploited the Home Affairs department, causing suffering for South African citizens and immigrants alike.
Advocate Shamila Batohi, the National Director of Public Prosecutions, outlined the role of her office in advancing accountability and justice. “We are committed to the pursuit of those who exploit our systems and erode public trust,” Batohi affirmed.
The collective efforts of various institutions, including the Special Investigating Unit and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, are presenting a united front to tackle these issues head-on. The forum is an essential step towards addressing corruption and reforming the systems that allow it to flourish.
As South Africa embarks on this critical journey, the commitment to holding corrupt actors accountable will be pivotal. The message is clear: the fight against corruption is not just about enforcement; it is about reclaiming the democratic space for all South Africans.
