(The Post News)- South African track and road athletes put on a show this past weekend, delivering record-breaking and personal best performances across the continent.
Akani Simbine made a fiery return to the track, opening his 100m season with a dominant 9.90-second sprint at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix. He comfortably outpaced Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala, who clocked 10.00.
Sinesipho Dambile also turned heads, smashing his personal best with a 20.01 win in the men’s 200m B race — a time even faster than Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo’s 200m A race victory of 20.23.
Youngster Njabulo Mbatha impressed in the men’s 400m hurdles, claiming victory in a lifetime best of 49.07. Meanwhile, Jo-Ane du Plessis secured gold in the javelin with a 61.27m throw.
Over in Gqeberha, Adriaan Wildschutt stunned the field and the record books, slicing seven seconds off the SA 10km road record with a 27:28 finish. Despite tough wind, he surged late, cheered on by his family. “I gave it everything,” he said.
