(The Post News)– Twice World Player of the Year Portia Woodman-Wickliffe is stepping back onto the international stage, announcing her return to rugby to boost New Zealand’s chances of clinching a third consecutive Women’s Rugby World Cup title later this year in England.
The 33-year-old winger, known for her explosive pace and try-scoring prowess, initially hung up her boots after earning a second Olympic Sevens gold in Paris. But following a stellar campaign with the Blues Women in Super Rugby Aupiki, the desire to return grew stronger with each passing game. She shared that the decision wasn’t made lightly—it involved deep reflection, especially about what it meant for her and her family.
Woodman-Wickliffe has been instrumental in past World Cup victories, including the thrilling 2021 final where New Zealand upset favourites England. Now, as England gear up to host the tournament as front-runners once again, her comeback adds a powerful edge to the Black Ferns’ campaign.
Coach Allan Bunting called her a game-changer, highlighting her leadership, elite athleticism, and the invaluable experience she brings into the squad.
