(The Post News)- After a 25-year wait, São Paulo will once again host world-class women’s tennis as the WTA confirms the return of a tournament to Brazil’s biggest city this September.
The newly announced WTA 250 SP Open is scheduled for the week of 8 September and will feature a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles event on outdoor hard courts. The tournament steps in to replace Tunisia’s Jasmin Open and marks the WTA’s long-awaited return to the country.
The last time São Paulo hosted a WTA event was in 2000, when Hungary’s Rita Kuti-Kis claimed the singles title, and Argentina’s Laura Montalvo and Paola Suarez took the doubles honours. Now, after a generation-long absence, fans will finally have a home tournament to rally behind once more.
This addition to the WTA calendar comes in the midst of a thrilling 2025 season, which has already seen 15 different singles champions across all WTA levels. Notably, Russian teen sensation Mirra Andreeva made history as the youngest winner of a WTA 1000 event.
The WTA says this momentum is being felt beyond the court, too. The tour’s recent brand refresh has helped drive engagement, with social media followers growing by 25% year-on-year through March, and video content views rising an impressive 163% in the first quarter.
