(The Post News)– The Telkom Netball League (TNL) kicked off with high-intensity match ups in Sun City this week, as the Jaguars battled back to clinch a narrow 52-50 victory over the Southern Stings on Wednesday.
Coach Rozanne Matthyse praised her team’s fight: “We’re still working towards our goal, but today was a great step forward. The urgency and connection between players were impressive.” Stings coach Dr Freda Kemp acknowledged the progress her squad is making despite the loss, noting they’re still testing combinations and aiming to reduce errors.
In the invitational clash, the SPAR Baby Proteas (SA U/21) showcased their growing dominance with a strong 62-51 win over the Zambezi Eagles. After a tight first three quarters, the Baby Proteas stormed through the final stretch. Maria Du Raan impressed with flawless shooting, while defenders Ametisse Bandu and Kiara van Eeden stood firm at the back.
Later, the tactical battle between Crinums and Fireballs lived up to expectations, with coaches Martha Mosoahle-Samm and Dr Elsje Jordaan—both backed by legendary assistants Karla Pretorius and Bongi Msomi—guiding their teams through a chess-like encounter. After a level first quarter (11-11), the Fireballs pulled away to win 58-47, maintaining their lead through the final quarters.
Meanwhile, Tshukudu extended their winning streak with a dominant 70-36 victory over the Diamonds, marking three straight wins under new coach Vivian Foko. Elsewhere, Sonoblomo edged Lillies 46-44 in a thriller, and the Sunbirds delivered a commanding 57-30 win over the Comets. With Power Week 1 heating up, fans can expect even more electrifying action as teams push for early-season momentum.
