(The Post News)– Eight men, some of whom were Iranian nationals, have been detained in two separate counter-terrorism raids in England, the Metropolitan Police have confirmed.
Four of them — two of whom are aged 29, one is aged 40, and another is aged 46 — are Iranian citizens. Authorities are still verifying the nationality and identity of the fifth man, who was detained in Manchester.
Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, said, “The investigation is in its early stages,” and they are investigating a variety of avenues of inquiry to determine any potential purpose and whether there is any further risk to the public. The location reported to be the target of the alleged plot has not been disclosed. The site targeted, however, has been notified and is being helped by police, police said.
In another and separate raid on the same day, three other men aged 39, 44, and 55 were arrested under the National Security Act in northwest and west London. The three are Iranian nationals and are being held in police custody as searches continue.
These are grave incidents that demonstrate the ongoing need to develop our response to threats to national security,” said Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, who commended police and security services for their work. “We owe them a debt of gratitude for keeping the public safe.”
Commander Murphy He has urged the public to be vigilant and contact the police if they are ever suspicious of anything, noting they understand that the public may be concerned. Meanwhile, inquiries for each operation are ongoing.
