Sinenhlanhla Mathonsi was allegedly stabbed to death at her work palace on Sunday morning by her boyfriend, Anele Kula.
(The Post News)– South Africa’s persistent gender-based violence crisis continues to traumatize its citizens, whether through personal experience or the relentless barrage of devastating reports.
Mathonsi was a Pick ‘n Pay employee at the Pretoria Glen Mall store in Soweto. That fateful morning, she woke up to go to work just like any other day, never expecting what would unfold. While the exact reason for the dispute is still unknown, reports suggest the alleged suspect ambushed and stabbed her to death.
The incident is reported to have occurred on Sunday around 8 a.m. at her place of work. Moreover, according to the police, they were informed about the incident and responded.
Social media outrage has led to widespread questioning of the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. On the other hand, Mathonsi’s family has requested CCTV footage, seeking answers to how the incident occurred in a crowded store.
Numerous people have raised questions like, “Where were the bystanders when she needed help?” and “What does this say about our society? Could there be any hope left in fighting this GBV crisis?”
Meanwhile, the accused, Anele Kula, was arrested and has made a court appearance at the Protea Magistrate Court in Soweto.
The court proceedings against the accused took an unexpected turn when the bail was offered, with the accused refusing bail, intensifying public scrutiny. People were left wondering if this decision suggests acknowledgment of guilt or another strategic reason. The next court appearance was set to be in June 2025.
