(The Post News)– President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended warm congratulations to Pope Leo XIV following his historic election as the first American-born leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago, was elected on May 8, 2025, following the passing of Pope Francis. His election marks a significant milestone in the Church’s history, being the first time a pontiff hails from the United States. In a statement released by the presidency, Ramaphosa praised the new pope’s call for peace and inclusivity.
According to Ramaphosa, Pope Leo XIV’s vision of unity and peace appeals to the majority of humanity, honoring Pope Francis’ eternal legacy while inspiring new hope for the globe in these difficult times.
Pope Leo XIV addressed thousands from the Vatican balcony shortly after his election, beginning with the words, “Peace be with all of you.” He emphasized unity, compassion, and care for the poor—values that align closely with global aspirations for justice and equity.
Ramaphosa said that they are excited to collaborate with Pope Leo XIV in the “spirit of peace, mutual respect, and interfaith dialogue”. He concluded his remarks by wishing the new pope strength and wisdom in his leadership.
