South Africa’s athletes lit up the track at the World Relay Championships in Guangzhou, China, scooping three medals, two of them goldin a performance that turned heads around the globe.
The men’s 4x100m team of Bayanda Walaza, Sinesipho Dambile, Bradley Nkoana and Akani Simbine delivered a show-stopping run, with Simbine powering past American Brandon Hicklin to win in 37.61 seconds. That’s not just a gold medal,it’s the fastest time recorded this year.
The women’s 4x400m team also made their mark. After setting a new South African record in the heats, they broke it again in the final. Shirley Nekhubui, Miranda Coetzee, Precious Melepo and Zeney van der Walt crossed the line in 3:24.84, securing a hard-fought bronze behind Spain and the US.
The men’s 4x400m squad of Gaerdeo Isaacs, Udeme Okon, Leendert Koekemoer and Zakithi Nene delivered another standout performance, clocking 2:57.50 to dominate the final. Nene powered ahead in the final stretch, sealing South Africa’s second gold and another world-leading time.
In the mixed 4x400m, the team qualified strongly but finished fifth in the final.
