KwaZulu-Natal’s Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Health Nomagugu Mngadi Simelane has extended her deepest condolences to the families of four doctors who tragically passed away while serving in KZN hospitals. The MEC was addressing the media in Durban She expressed her heartfelt sympathies, acknowledging the immense loss to both the medical community and the families affected.
Out of respect for the bereaved families’ wishes, the MEC has refrained from making further comments, emphasizing the need for privacy during this difficult time.
However, she addressed the specific circumstances surrounding the death of intern doctor from Prince Mshiyeni Hospital who reported his sickness and he was forced to come to work . The doctor had reportedly fallen ill but was required to continue working despite reporting his condition on his arrival at work He collapsed and died on the spot inside premises of the hospital.The MEC confirmed that this matter has been taken very seriously. An investigation is underway, and the supervisor at Prince Mshiyeni Hospital has been placed on suspension pending the outcome.
The department’s response underscores the importance of ensuring the well-being of healthcare workers while also addressing systemic issues that may have contributed to this tragedy.
