(The Post News)– An investigation has been launched following the tragic drowning of a Polish couple at Table Bay Harbour over the weekend, local authorities confirmed on Monday.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the bodies of a man and woman, both Polish nationals, were recovered from the water after emergency services were alerted to a possible drowning incident near the V&A Waterfront on Saturday afternoon.
The couple, believed to be tourists in their early thirties, were last seen walking near the harbour’s edge before they were reported missing. It is not yet clear whether foul play is suspected or whether the incident was accidental.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as “chaotic” after the couple disappeared beneath the surface.
John Matthews, a local boat operator, explained that they heard screams and saw people pointing to the water, and although rescue services reacted fast, it was already too late.
DIRCO spokesperson Clayson Monyela asserted that hey are in communication with the Polish Embassy to guarantee that the families of the victims receive the assistance they require.
Post-mortem examinations will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Police have urged the public to avoid speculation while investigations continue.
Authorities have also reiterated the importance of safety around coastal and harbour areas, particularly for visitors unfamiliar with local conditions. “Tragic events like these remind us of the inherent dangers present near open water,” said Rwexana.
No further details have been released pending the outcome of the investigation and formal identification of the deceased.
