(The Post News)– Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) made history during the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday in Munich, defeating Inter Milan 5-0 and securing the 2024–25 Champions League title. The victory marked PSG’s first-ever UEFA Champions League title.
Five years ago, against Bayern Munich, PSG had the opportunity to break their European drought, but a goal from Kingsley Coman in Lisbon prevented them from doing so, securing the title for Bayern.
Despite some setbacks along the route to success, the Paris team has since been determined to get revenge for their heartbreaking loss. The beginning of PSG was memorable, in retrospect. Following a 1-0 victory over Genoa to start their Champions League season, they went four games without a victory, losing to Arsenal and Atletico Madrid and drawing with PSV Eindhoven.
However, after regrouping, they defeated Stuttgart (1-4), Manchester City (4-2), and Salzburg (0-3) to finish the league season in 15th place and secure a play-off berth. In their play-off match up with fellow Ligue 1 team Bras, they defeated them 0–3 on the road before thrashing them 7–0 at the Parc des Princes for an overall score of 10-0.
Furthermore, when PSG met Premier League champions and league phase leaders Liverpool in the round of 16, things quickly grew serious, and Paris braced for the worst.
In the second leg at Anfield, the Reds had a significant lead thanks to a late goal from Harvey Elliott, but this is when PSG really got going. A penalty shootout was eventually required after an early goal by Ousmane Dembélé forced extra time, but no other goals were scored. Gianluigi Donnarumma’s amazing penalty kicks against England helped Italy win the Euro 2020 championship, and he delivered once more to lead PSG to the quarterfinals.
Aston Villa, led by an old friend, Unai Emery, came next. The French team’s 3-1 first-leg victory set the stage, but Birmingham made things nerve-wracking by allowing the Villans to lose by just one goal, necessitating extra time. PSG advanced to the semi-finals, where they met and defeated their English rival, Arsenal, after the match concluded 5–4 overall.
Despite a consolation goal from Bukayo Saka, Fabian Ruiz and Achraf Hakimi finished the job in the return leg after Ousmane Dembele stunned the Emirates with a 0-1 victory in the first leg.
Their final test was against Simone Inzaghi’s seasoned Inter Milan team, who had already defeated Barcelona and Bayern Munich en route to the championship game. However, PSG once again brilliantly demonstrated their supremacy by winning.
In Munich’s Allianz Arena, teenager Desire Doue scored twice for PSG and assisted on the first goal for Achraf Hakimi. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia then made it four, and 19-year-old replacement Senny Mayulu finished the scoring to cap off the most lopsided final in the history of the championship. PSG is only the second French team to win the tournament since Marseille defeated AC Milan, Inter’s city rivals, in Munich in 1993.
