(The Post News) The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK) announced yesterday the redeployment of its Secretary General Floyd Shivambu to the National Assembly, following the party President Jacob Zuma’s meeting with its National Officials on Monday 02 June 2025.
With the decision that some may view as demotion or beginning of the end for Shivambu, who joined MK nine months ago after ditching his position as the deputy president of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), the party he formed with Julius Malema, he still mantained that joining MK was the best political decision that he has ever made.
Shivambu joined MK as a national organiser and later promoted to the role of secretary general, an appointment that was met with critism by some senior MK members, who raise that during May 2024 general elections he was campaigning with EFF against the same party that he is now representing.
Zuma said in a written statement that Shivambu’s redeployment is related to his recent visit to the self proclaimed fugitive prophet Shepard Bushiri’s Enlightened Christian Gathering church in Malawi, during Easter holidays.
Shivambu had claimed in an interview with SABC last week that his visit to Bushiri was sanctioned by Zuma, though the party had before distanced it self, citing that the trip was on his personal capacity without its mandate.
The opposition party leader, Zuma highlighted that after discussions, their conclusions deemed Shivambu’s visit to Malawi as being against the spirits and prescripts of the MK Party constitution.
Shivambu violeted MK Party’s section 3 which stipulates that, “undertaking international trips and participating in activities and programmes that are opposed to the agenda of the MK party or a allied party,”
“Based on the deliberations by the National Officials, it was reaffirmed that the trip not an officially sanctioned programme of the organisation of President, which therefore goes against the constitution of the party,” Zuma stated.
Furthermore, Zuma said the party was approached by various sectors of civil society, hence they were left with not other option but to act swiftly in addressing Shivambu’s matter, adding that their organisation is responsible and accountable to its electorate and the broader society.
Though some party members have expressed their dissatisfaction with Shivambu’s presence in MK Party, Zuma firmrly mantained that his invaluable skills and experience as a politician has helped in the advancement of the organisation and will continue to be of benefit in the new role.
Zuma said he believes that Shivambu’s redeployment will strengthen party’s caucus as the official opposition considering his wealth of experience as a former MP.
