Springbok Women touch down in Antananarivo, ready to defend their African title and push toward the 2025 Rugby World Cup.
(The Post News)- From Northampton to Antananarivo, the journey may be long, but for the Springbok Women, every stop is part of the bigger picture, qualifying and preparing for the Rugby World Cup in England this August and September. The squad touched down in Madagascar’s capital on Wednesday, ready to begin their Rugby Africa Women’s Cup campaign, and to keep building momentum.
For the coaching team, the mission is clear: consistency both on and off the field. Assistant coach Bafana Nhleko says this forms the backbone of their 2025 season strategy. With a solid foundation already laid during a week of intense preparation in Johannesburg, Nhleko and head coach Franzel September believe the team is on the right track.
“We’re developing our team’s core, so it’s crucial that we stay consistent in our game and approach,” said Nhleko, reflecting on the squad’s progress since arrival.
The Springbok Women will open their campaign against Uganda this Saturday. Among the 28 selected players, centre Aphiwe Ngwevu stands out as the most experienced, with 24 caps under her belt, including appearances in last year’s Africa Cup, where South Africa claimed the continental title and booked their ticket to the World Cup.
Ngwevu, who plays for Border Ladies, understands her pivotal role in the team’s efforts. She says this tournament is more than just another competition; it’s a platform to prove her value in the team. Her job, as she puts it, is to dominate the midfield, create go-forward ball, and help launch the attack.
Having overcome personal challenges ahead of her 2022 World Cup selection, Ngwevu is no stranger to digging deep. She’s ready to do it all again. “This trip will be tough, but we’ll bring our trademark physicality and give it our all,” she says.
In their most recent test against Spain, Ngwevu delivered a standout performance: 110 meters gained from 12 carries, six defenders beaten, and a flawless defensive record. She was deservedly named player of the match. Still, she’s firmly focused on what lies ahead. “I’ll give my best, that’s all I can do. The rest is out of my hands,” she adds.
The Springbok Women are scheduled to play three matches in Madagascar, all at Stade Makis in Antananarivo.
