(The Post News)– Coco Gauff proved once again that resilience trumps perfection, grinding out a gritty three-set win over world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the French Open final on Saturday. The American battled through swirling winds and mental fatigue to secure a 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4 comeback victory and her second Grand Slam title, adding to her 2023 US Open triumph.
Reflecting after the match, Gauff admitted this title was harder earned than her first, explaining that the pressure of already being a Grand Slam champion added weight to every moment. She revealed that the French Open had always felt within reach in her early career, and not winning it would’ve left her with deep regrets. Determined to avoid that outcome, she resolved to give it her all, no matter the conditions.
The final was messy, shaped by gusty winds and nerves, with the players combining for 100 unforced errors, 70 from Sabalenka alone. Gauff noted the difficult transition from a calm indoor warm-up to a blustery court, saying the win came down to sheer mental strength and staying composed.
Despite her frustration, Gauff tried to stay focused, knowing that if she was rattled, her opponent likely was too. “It wasn’t pretty,” she said, “but I fought through, and that’s what counts.”
