(The Post News)- The ongoing taxi-related conflict in Cape Town has turned deadly once again in recent days. On Monday, a man was found dead inside a minibus taxi on Winnie Mandela Street in Langa, marking the latest fatal incident linked to the violence.
Sergeant Wesley Twigg stated that Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal shooting that took place on Monday, 9 June 2025, in Winnie Mandela Street, Langa.
An adult male was found with gunshot wounds inside a minibus taxi and was declared dead at the scene by medical personnel. The suspect/s fled the area and has not yet been arrested. Langa detectives have opened a murder case, and the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities have not yet made any arrests following the recent fatal shootings reported in Mfuleni, Somerset West, and most recently, Langa.
Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku paid a visit to the busy Public Transport Interchange (PTI) this On Tuesday afternoon, amid ongoing tensions between two competing minibus taxi associations that have been in dispute over approved routes since last week.
In a video shared by Smile FM, ward 84 Councilor Norman McFarlane said he was at the Somerset West Public Transport Interchange to engage with police and understand the current situation. He noted that part of the interchange was completely deserted, as rival taxi associations, Codeta and CATA, were reportedly preventing each other from using the route. Councillor McFarlane added that there was a strong law enforcement presence in the area including SAPS, Law Enforcement, and Metro Policeand that this would remain in place until the situation fully stabilized.
A meeting between the rival taxi associations, CATA and CODETA, is scheduled for Thursday. Authorities hope this will help restore the vital transport services, as the ongoing dispute is significantly affecting the local economy.
