(The Post News)– The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape has extended its deepest condolences to the families and communities affected by the floods, that have killed 59 people in the province, and acknowledged the immense pain and suffering that many are enduring.
The severity of the situation demands a coordinated response, and the ANC Women’s League is urging the government to declare a state of disaster in the affected areas. This would enable the allocation of necessary resources to support rescue efforts and provide relief to those affected, ensuring that the response is swift and effective. The party also emphasises the importance of investing in climate-resilient infrastructure and disaster preparedness programmes to mitigate the impact of future disasters, recognising that climate change is leading to more frequent and severe weather events.
Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa’s words resonated with the gravity of the situation, as he highlighted the human impact of the tragedy. The loss of 57 lives is not just a statistic but a reminder of the families and communities torn apart by this disaster. Each life lost represents a loved one, a family member, or a community member who will be deeply missed. As President Cyril Ramaphosa prepares to visit the affected areas, the ANC and its Women’s League are urging all South Africans to come together in support of those affected, promoting empathy, unity, and resilience in the face of this tragedy.
In this difficult time, the ANC believes that it is essential for the government to prioritise the needs of the affected communities, ensuring that they receive the support and resources necessary to recover and rebuild. By working together and showing compassion and solidarity, South Africans can help mitigate the impact of this disaster and support the recovery efforts in the affected areas.
