(The Post News)– A commanding all-round display from the Proteas Women saw them power to a 166-run DLS victory over the West Indies in the third and final ODI on Tuesday, sealing the series 2-1 at the Three Ws Oval in Barbados.
Batting first after being sent in by the hosts, South Africa posted 278-6 in 45.4 overs, thanks to a sensational 184-run opening stand between Tazmin Brits and captain Laura Wolvaardt. Brits smashed her fourth ODI century, 101 off 91 balls with four sixes and eight fours, while Wolvaardt anchored with a composed 75.
Their intent was clear from ball one, with the pair reaching 100 inside 13 overs. Brits rode her luck after surviving an LBW appeal and a dropped catch but punished the bowlers in style before eventually falling in the 27th over. A mini-collapse followed, but Marizanne Kapp (34*) held the innings together despite rain interruptions.
The West Indies’ chase, set at 288 off 39 overs due to multiple rain delays, unravelled almost immediately. Masabata Klaas blew the top order away with a fiery spell of 4-25, supported by Kapp and Annerie Dercksen, as the hosts slumped to 10-4. Only Jahzara Claxton (43) and Aaliyah Alleyne (32) offered any resistance, as the Windies folded for 121.
Wolvaardt praised the team’s shift in mindset, saying they wanted to attack from the start and were thrilled to see it pay off. Klaas’s early burst, she added, was exactly the “killer instinct” they’ve been aiming for with the ball.
