(The Post News)– Tazmin Brits powered Proteas Women to a convincing 50-run win over the West Indies in the first T20I at the Three Ws Oval in Barbados on Friday night, handing the visitors a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Brits delivered a record-setting knock, finishing unbeaten on 98 off 63 balls. Her innings included nine boundaries and four sixes, with the final maximum coming off the last ball of the innings, a fitting end to her commanding performance. It’s the highest individual T20I score against the West Indies and marks her 14th half-century in the format.
Despite a rocky start with both Laura Wolvaardt and Marizanne Kapp falling early, Brits steadied the innings alongside Nadine de Klerk, who added 21 in a 71-run stand for the third wicket. South Africa ended on 183/6, their highest T20I total against the West Indies.
Captain Wolvaardt said securing an early win was crucial for momentum, particularly in the fast-paced T20 format.
West Indies never truly threatened the chase, finishing on 133/6. Jannillea Glasgow offered some resistance with an unbeaten 53, her maiden T20I fifty, supported by Chinelle Henry’s 26. However, their 81-run partnership came too late to shift the match.
Marizanne Kapp led the Proteas’ disciplined bowling attack with figures of 2/27, while Tryon, Mlaba, Khaka, and de Klerk also claimed wickets. Tryon’s boundary catch to dismiss Qiana Joseph in the second over set the tone for a superb team fielding effort.
