(The Post News)- Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has officially expressed regret to Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, over Tehran’s missile attack on the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. During a phone call, Pezeshkian assured the emir that the missile attack was not aimed at Qatar or its people, emphasizing that the incident does not threaten Qatar’s security.
The missile attack targeted the US base, with 19 missiles launched by Iran and Qatari defence forces intercepting 18 of them. This strike was described by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a powerful response to US military actions against Iranian nuclear facilities. Despite the scale of the attack, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed regret to Qatar’s Emir over missile attack, assuring that Qatar was neither a target nor at risk.
In the phone conversation, Pezeshkian stressed that Qatar remains a neighbouring, Muslim, and sisterly state and expressed his hope that relations between the two countries continue to be based on respect for sovereignty and good neighbourliness. Qatar’s Emir strongly condemned the missile attack, calling it a flagrant violation of Qatar’s sovereignty and airspace. The emir noted that this violation contradicts the longstanding close relations between the two countries and Qatar’s commitment to dialogue with Iran.
Qatar’s Prime Minister also acknowledged that the missile attack has left a scar on Qatar-Iran relations, one that will require time to heal. In response to the missile strike, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry sent a letter to the United Nations Security Council and Secretary-General António Guterres, denouncing the Iranian missile attack as an extremely dangerous escalation that threatens regional peace and security.
The missile attack occurred amid rising tensions in the region, especially following the conflict between Israel and Iran that began after Israeli strikes inside Iran earlier in June. Although US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran shortly after the missile strike, both countries have accused each other of violations.
In this context, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expresses regret to Qatar’s Emir over missile attack as part of Tehran’s efforts to maintain diplomatic ties and reassure Qatar despite the tensions caused by the military strike. Both Iran and Qatar appear committed to preserving their fraternal relations, even as regional conflicts continue to escalate.
