(The Post News)- Springboks captain Siya Kolisi has been ruled out of Saturday’s clash against the Barbarians with what the team is calling a minor neck issue. Assistant coach Mzwandile Stick confirmed that the double World Cup-winning skipper is dealing with stiffness in his neck, and while he could have potentially recovered in time, the decision was made not to risk him.
“He probably would’ve been good to go by kick-off, but we’d rather give him time and avoid any unnecessary setbacks,” said Stick. “It’s not serious, just precautionary.”
With Kolisi sidelined, Jesse Kriel has been handed the captain’s armband—an appointment that took the seasoned centre by surprise, but one Stick insists was an easy call. “Jesse’s always been a leader in our group. Even when he’s not starting, he puts in the work and uplifts those around him,” Stick added.
Kriel, stepping in from vice-captain duties, expressed his gratitude and calm confidence ahead of the match. “I’m extremely honoured,” he said. “But in this team, leadership is shared. Everyone takes ownership of their roles, and that helps you grow. I’ve had the privilege of learning from guys like Siya, Eben, and Handre.”
The Barbarians fixture also gives the Boks a chance to blood more leaders, something head coach Rassie Erasmus has long championed. For Kriel, it’s not about changing his approach, but continuing to lead by example in a squad where leadership runs deep.
