(The Post News)– The Junior Springboks kicked off their World Rugby U20 Championship campaign in vigorous style, thrashing Australia 73–17 in a dominant Pool A opener on Sunday in Calvisano. But despite the resounding result, the team is keeping their focus locked on their next big challenge, Friday’s showdown with defending champions England.
Coach Kevin Foote was full of praise for his side’s physical and tactical performance, especially given the tough, humid Italian conditions. “The heat was brutal, but our hydration, nutrition, and overall conditioning were spot on,” said Foote, crediting the backroom staff for their meticulous preparation.
Beyond fitness, Foote applauded his team’s ability to execute the game plan with discipline and maturity. “We balanced the kicking and running game well and adapted when needed. The on-field leadership was composed, and the players made smart decisions under pressure.”
He also commended the smooth inclusion of late call-ups Jaco Grobbelaar and Jaco Williams, who both gelled with the squad seamlessly.
Captain Riley Norton, who led with a composed display at lock, echoed the coach’s sentiments. “It was a great win, but we know we can still improve. There’s no space for complacency. England is up next, and they’ll test us in different ways.”
England, who beat Scotland 56–19 in their opening match, will face the Junior Boks on Friday at 18:00 in Rovigo, a high-stakes clash that could shape the group standings.
