A catastrophic fire ripped through the Dakota shanty town settlements in Durban, near Esphingo, at approximately 3 am today, leaving a trail of destruction and despair in its wake. The blaze, which was allegedly sparked by an unattended stove, ravaged over 200 shacks, displacing more than 300 residents, including vulnerable children.
The fire’s rapid spread was fueled by strong gusts of wind, making it impossible for residents to contain the flames. In the aftermath, KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi swiftly deployed teams to assess the situation and provide support. Gift of the Givers disaster teams are also on the ground, offering vital assistance to those left homeless.
The eThekwini Municipality is working closely with provincial authorities to evaluate the situation and provide relief to affected residents. MEC Buthelezi emphasized the importance of vigilance, particularly during the winter season, when such incidents are more common. He assured that discussions would be held with the municipality to secure alternative accommodation for the displaced residents.
eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba expressed concern about the impact of the fire on children, who are currently on holiday break. “We are very concerned about such situations because it’s disturbing the kids,” he said, assuring that the municipality would do its best to find temporary shelter for the affected families.
