(The Post News)– Tottenham Hotspur condemned racial abuse directed at Mathys Tel after their UEFA Super Cup loss to Paris Saint-Germain.
The club said it was “disgusted” and called for action from social media companies and relevant authorities. Tel missed a penalty in the shoot-out, which Spurs lost 4-3 after drawing 2-2 in regular time.
Abuse began after he fired his spot-kick wide during the deciding moments of the match. Tottenham permanently signed Tel from Bayern Munich in June in a £30 million ($40.76m) deal. The France under-21 international had initially joined the club on loan earlier in the season. Spurs pledged full support to Tel and promised to help identify those responsible for the abuse.
They emphasized that racism has no place in football or anywhere in society. “We are disgusted by the racist abuse directed at Mathys Tel on social media after last night’s UEFA Super Cup loss,” Tottenham said in its statement.
Tottenham announced that the club will fully cooperate with law enforcement and social media companies to identify those responsible. They pledged to take the strongest possible action against any individuals involved in the racist abuse directed at Mathys Tel.
Tel came off the bench in the 79th minute, with Tottenham holding a 2-0 lead against Paris Saint-Germain. The young forward had joined Spurs permanently from Bayern Munich during the summer, following a successful loan spell last season. Managerial staff brought him on to help close out the match and add fresh energy in the final stages.
His substitution appeared to strengthen Tottenham’s attack, but the game soon took a dramatic turn.
