(ThePostNews) – Controversial Iran comments made by SANDF Chief General Rudzani Maphwanya have drawn strong criticism from the Democratic Alliance (DA), which labelled them irresponsible posturing amid strained South Africa–US relations.
Before becoming SANDF Chief in June 2021, General Rudzani Maphwanya served as Chief of Joint Operations from 2019 to May 2021. During his official visit to Tehran, General Maphwanya made several remarks that attracted attention.
He aligned South Africa with Iran’s global positions, expressed support for populations perceived as oppressed, and said the visit symbolized a deepening of political ties with Iran. His comments raise concerns because South Africa’s foreign policy traditionally maintains a neutral stance on global conflicts. The SANDF Chief aimed to strengthen defense cooperation during his trip. Moreover, he met senior Iranian military officials, including Chief of Staff Major General Mohammad Bagheri.
Political Overreach and Foreign Policy Concerns
In a statement, the DA said General Maphwanya’s comments showed political maneuvering that exceeded his constitutional and professional duties. The party noted he went beyond the usual military-to-military engagement by publicly supporting Iran’s global stances, including on Gaza.
The DA emphasized that the elected Government of National Unity holds responsibility for foreign policy, especially regarding the controversial Iran comments. Therefore, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) must handle such matters exclusively.
In response, DIRCO confirmed that only the government or appointed foreign policy representatives can issue official statements. Furthermore, spokesperson Chrispin Phiri said Minister Ronald Lamola would seek clarity about the remarks amid rising controversy.
Phiri also added that individuals not responsible for foreign policy, including General Maphwanya in this case, should not make statements interpreted as South Africa’s official stance. Therefore, statements attributed to General Maphwanya do not represent South Africa’s formal foreign policy position.
