(The Post News)– 39-year-old Nigerian-born Beninese international star Razak Omotoyossi has died. His death was confirmed Tuesday evening by a former club, Helsindborg IF, in a statement on X. In the statement, the club also stated that their “thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”
Omotoyossi became a Benin star after switching from Nigerian nationality to Benin. The switch came after he was Nigeria’s most celebrated football player at the start of his career.
He made history at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals, being the first player to score for Benin. His performance was at its peak in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.
Omotoyossi scored four goals to nil in the African Cup of Nations in a single game against Togo. He competed with prominent people like Samuel Eto’o and became a top goal scorer in 2008.
After excelling at Helsindborg IF, Omotoyossi moved to FC Metz in France. His career spanned Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. He played in South Africa, Egypt, France, Sweden, Libya, and Syria. Omotoyossi leaves history in Benin with 21 goals for his 55 international appearances, making him the Beninese all-time goal scorer.
A French reporter, Jonathan Vaucher, of Moselle TV, reported that the footballer lost his house in a terrible fire last month and lost his sister. “He made a farewell video appearance when he was clearly frail and pleaded for assistance from the people of Benin,” stated Vaucher.
Meanwhile, on social media, his loved ones have received tributes and supportive words from many fans, past teammates, and a number of his former clubs.
