(The Post News)– The Limpopo Department of Education has suspended a 51-year-old school principal with immediate effect from the Capricorn District. This follows allegations that he sexually assaulted a 17-year-old Grade 12 pupil.
During his court appearance at the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, the accused was formally charged with sexual assault. He was released on bail of R3,000, and the case was postponed to October 20 for further investigation.
Reports indicate that the School Governing Body (SGB) Federation in Limpopo expressed concerns after the principal was released on bail. SGB Federation convener Derick Mosoana emphasized the need to strengthen child protection measures in schools.
He expressed that the SGB was not surprised by the court’s decision to grant the suspect bail. However, the SGB, together with education stakeholders, is determined to continue promoting awareness and strengthening child protection programs in collaboration.
According to Limpopo Education MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, the allegations undermine ongoing efforts to combat gender-based violence and protect learners’ rights. Department spokesperson Mike Maringa confirmed that the principal had been suspended with immediate effect and that an investigation would be initiated.
The MEC explained that as the matter is still in court, the department is not at liberty to comment further. Moreover, the learner will receive “support and counseling” from the department.
