(The Post News)– The death penalty demand for former Congolese president Joseph Kabila has sharply escalated tensions in Congolese politics.
Many observers argue that these actions amount to Kabila political persecution, as the government appears to target him specifically to weaken his influence.
Claims and Legal Process
On Friday, the court heard General Lucien Rene Likulia, the Congolese military auditor general, call on judges to impose the death penalty on Kabila for treason and war crimes, including homicide, torture, and organizing.
Meanwhile, in July, the court conducted a proceeding without the defendant present for allegedly aiding the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels. Critics describe the charges as part of Kabila’s political persecution, aiming to intimidate opposition members.
About Kabila’s Political Career
After his father, Laurent Kabila, was assassinated, Joseph Kabila took over and ruled the DRC from 2001 to 2009. Since then, he has continued to influence Congolese politics.
Since late 2023, Kabila has resided outside the country, mostly in South Africa. In April, he announced plans to return to the DRC to help advance peace in the eastern region devastated by war.
Moreover, in May, Kabila visited the rebel-occupied eastern region, meeting local faith leaders in the presence of M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka. That same month, the senate voted to lift his protection from legal action.
Shortly thereafter, the government banned his political party and took control of his assets, and the senate voted to lift his protection from legal action. Supporters argue that these steps reflect Kabila’s political persecution rather than purely legal measures.
Global and Domestic Responses
International observers criticize the death penalty demand for Joseph Kabila and question the fairness of the proceedings. Human rights groups warn that executing a political opponent would further demonstrate Kabila’s political persecution and undermine the credibility of the DRC justice system. Locally, Kabila’s party secretary, Ferdinand Kambere, said the government continues “unwavering persecution directed at an opposition member.”
Far-reaching Effects
The death penalty demand for Joseph Kabila carries consequences beyond his personal fate. The proceedings could shape the future of the M23 conflict, influence the balance of power in eastern provinces, and affect relations between Kinshasa and Kigali.
Analysts warn that ongoing Kabila political persecution risks deepening political divisions and undermining the stability of Congo’s institutions, making this trial a pivotal moment for the country.
