(The Post News) Const Sizwe Ngema, a metro police officer from Durban who has been accused of murder, will undergo a mental evaluation before seeking bail. He appeared once again before the Durban magistrate’s court on Monday.
On Easter Sunday, in the early hours of the morning, Ngema is believed to have fatally stabbed his pregnant girlfriend, Yolanda Bianca Khuzwayo, who was 23 years old. The incident occurred in an apartment on Joseph Nduli Street, which was previously known as Russell Street.
The 27-year-old filmed and took photos of Khuzwayo while the knife remained embedded in her neck, capturing her final moments. The video reportedly spread like wildfire across social media platforms, supposedly shared with her loved ones by the accused. Scheduled to submit a formal bail request during his fourth court appearance, Ngema faced a twist when Prosecutor Calvin Govender insisted on a psychiatric evaluation by the district surgeon.
Govender has disclosed that he’s uncovered new and relevant details regarding the case, having engaged in extensive discussions with all parties involved before proceeding with the application. Consequently, the court has decided to postpone the date to May 6th. Notably, Ravi Reddy, serving as the defense counsel, expressed no opposition to this decision. Reddy’s role in the case surfaced after Ngema’s unsuccessful request for legal aid. This rescheduling signifies the third instance of postponement since the proceedings commenced in early April.
During a short break in court proceedings, Yolanda’s aunt, Nozipho Khuzwayo, couldn’t contain her emotions. She questioned why the Ngema family would support someone she referred to as an “evil” criminal and urged him to confess. She stated that Ngema’s actions were deliberate and lacked remorse, evident from his filming of the incident.
Khuzwayo firmly articulated her belief, saying, “What he did was not a mistake; he did it on purpose, and the video he made showed he was proud.” Continuing, she labeled Ngema as “evil” after probing Yolanda about their relationship, questioning, “Are you sure you and this person are just friends?” asked Khuzwayo, “He was evil. I noticed the nasty looks in his eyes. The expression he gave me was deadly. That individual is evil. If you speak of evil, it is in him.”
Yolanda confided in her aunt and cousin, Philasande Khuzwayo, disclosing past incidents of physical assault. However, she later ceased sharing details about her relationship. Yolanda initially claimed that she and Ngema met at the training academy in 2023, but Khuzwayo only unveiled their romantic involvement three months later.
