(The Post News)- A wanted Mozambican Kidnapper has been shot and killed during confrontation with the SAPS anti-kidnapping task team in Kempton Park, near OR Tambo International Airport.
SAPS National Spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe reported that the suspect was actively sought by the police and was linked to a series of kidnappings for ransom in both Mozambique and South Africa. “The 40-year-old was on SERNIC which is Mozambique’s Wanted Persons Database.
According to Mathe, a warrant of arrest had been issued for him and that he was on Mozambique’s most wanted list. “Police were tracing a kidnapping victim abducted in July in Benoni when they linked ransom money to the suspect’s bank account,” Mathe said.
Mathe reported that the suspect rammed a police vehicle before opening fire on officers. A gun battle ensued in which he was fatally shot on the Voortrekker Road off-ramp. “No police officers were injured during the fire exchange,” Mathe confirmed.
