(The Post News)– The late Reeva Steenkamp’s mother, June Steenkamp, had a stroke, adding yet another tragic chapter to her family’s protracted and well-publicized battle. She is currently recuperating in a public hospital, and her family has established a fund to assist with the high expenses of her recovery.
Since her daughter’s tragic murder in 2013, June has been a powerful voice and a tireless advocate against gender-based violence. The family’s plea for support comes just two years after the passing of her husband, Barry, who died of what many believe was a “broken heart.” The family said June now faces a long and difficult road ahead, and her recovery requires extensive rehabilitation.
Steenkamp Family Vows to Uphold a Legacy
June’s family and supporters have set up a special rehabilitation fund to make sure she gets the care she needs. A crucial component of this endeavor is transparency, as the family has committed to having two independent lawyers authorize and audit all payments. The family has also announced that any remaining funds will be donated to the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation as a heartfelt tribute to Reeva’s memory.
June has long been an advocate for the organization, which is committed to addressing gender-based violence in South Africa. The group conducts a range of educational and outreach initiatives with the goals of avoiding violence, assisting survivors, and promoting structural change. June’s principles and the aim that has guided her life since the death of her daughter are reflected in this dedication.
After her daughter, Reeva, a model and law graduate, was shot and killed by Oscar Pistorius on Valentine’s Day, June Steenkamp has become a prominent public figure. Pistorius was ultimately found guilty of murder and given a prison sentence after claiming he thought she was an intruder. He was set free on parole at the beginning of 2024.
For over ten years, the Steenkamp family has endured tremendous suffering and public scrutiny. The family thanked everyone in a statement for sending their thoughts and prayers to June as she sets out on this challenging path to recovery.
