(The Post News) – The Stellenbosch Racism Probe has been confirmed by Mayor Jeremy Fassar following the leak of a video allegedly showing a senior municipal manager, Alexander Kannemeyer, making racially charged remarks about white employees.
Stellenbosch Racism Probe: Mayor Confirms Investigation
Initially, the municipality stated the footage was edited and taken from a confidential meeting. However, Mayor Fassar later clarified that the incident happened early in 2023, before he assumed office. Consequently, he announced a Stellenbosch Racism Probe to thoroughly investigate the matter.
According to the mayor, the video raises serious concerns, and the probe will seek to establish the facts. Appropriate action will follow based on the investigation’s findings.
The video reportedly shows the manager expressing concern about mostly white males scoring the highest in interviews, which he viewed as a barrier to transformation goals. At one point, he allegedly suggested making conditions difficult for white employees to encourage their exit from the municipality.
Following the leak, political figures have called for swift and decisive responses, labeling the remarks unlawful and discriminatory. Mayor Fassar emphasized the Stellenbosch Racism Probe is ongoing and pledged transparency throughout the process. A formal statement will be issued once the investigation is complete. As the investigation continues, all parties await the final findings to determine the next steps.
