(The Post News) – EU energy chief Dan Jorgensen told reporters on Thursday that the bloc and the United States are creating a plan to phase out dependency on Russian energy. He expressed optimism that the goal may be reached “quite soon,” ahead of the 2027 deadline.
Jorgensen made the remarks after meeting with U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright at the European Commission’s headquarters in Brussels. The talks focused on discussing and creating plans to reduce Europe’s reliance on Russian-supplied liquefied natural gas (LNG) and secure stable alternatives.
The discussions come amid broader sanction coordination between the pair to pressure Russia into ending the war with Ukraine. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen explained that this plan would include “phasing out Russian fossil fuels faster.”
EU Plan Under Fire
The discussed plan involves not renewing contracts for 2026 and 2027, depending on the type and length of contract. Member states such as Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia have pushed back, citing their heavy reliance on Russian energy in stabilizing their economies.
Critics warn that cutting off Russian supplies too abruptly risks price spikes and energy security challenges. Jorgensen insists that the solution to this would be to “import more LNG from the US,” referencing the $750 billion EU-US trade deal signed in July. The EU signed an agreement with the US to buy energy products worth $250bn per year for three years.
U.S. President Donald Trump described the agreement as one of the most groundbreaking ever achieved, benefiting both parties involved.
