(The Post News)– The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed that the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League (GPL) season will officially begin on the weekend of September 12, 2025, marking the start of another year of top-flight football excitement across the country.
The new campaign will run from September 2025 to May 2026, aligning with the FIFA international calendar to avoid scheduling conflicts ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Matches will primarily be held on weekends, while midweek fixtures are reserved for outstanding or rescheduled games.
GPL to Welcome Three Promoted Clubs
The GPL defending champions Bibiani Gold Stars SC will be looking to retain their crown after a historic triumph last season. They will face stiff competition from giants like Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak, Medeama SC, and Aduana Stars. Adding new energy to Ghana’s league are three promoted clubs: Techiman Eleven Wonders FC, Swedru All Blacks United FC, and Hohoe United FC, all eager to make their mark in the GPL.
The Ghana Premier League is not only a showcase of the nation’s best footballing talent but also a platform for young players to secure moves abroad. The league continues to serve as a vital feeder for the Black Stars, Ghana’s national team. GFA officials emphasized the importance of sticking to the calendar. “It is crucial that our domestic competitions are completed before the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This alignment will ensure our players are fully prepared for international duty,” the association said in a statement.
The player registration window opened on June 23, 2025, and closed on August 24, 2025, giving clubs time to finalize transfers and bolster their squads ahead of the opening fixtures. Teams have already begun preseason preparations, with friendlies lined up across the country. Supporters are expected to return in large numbers, particularly after last season’s strong attendance figures.
The season promises fierce competition, with clubs targeting continental spots in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup. Fans are especially eager to see if Gold Stars can defend their title or if traditional heavyweights like Kotoko and Hearts will reclaim dominance. The GPL 2025/26 season officially kicks off on September 12, 2025, ushering in nine months of football that will test players, excite fans, and shape the future of Ghanaian football.
