(The Post News) – After nearly a week of protest, ABC announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! will return to its platform starting today. The live late-night show will remain suspended on one ABC affiliate broadcasting group.
After ABC announced Kimmel’s return, Sinclair Broadcasting Group confirmed that the show would still be off on their stations, as discussions are still ongoing. They added that the show will be replaced with “news programming.” Last week, Sinclair replaced Jimmy Kimmel’s Friday timeslot with a Charlie Kirk tribute special.
Sinclair Broadcasting Group controls 39 ABC-affiliated stations and, together with Nexstar Media Group—the broadcasting group that removed the show altogether—makes up 25% of the overall American TV audience. Therefore, these station groups have a lot of authority with Disney (the parent company of ABC), resulting in the controversial removal after Kimmel.
Kimmel was removed after he had made a joke about the Trump supporters’ response to finding out that the shooter of conservative activist Charlie Kirk was not a Democrat. The controversial removal, in addition to earlier condemnation from FCC Chair Brendan Carr, a Republican appointed by Trump, raised concerns that the move was politically motivated.
Disney lost money as the public boycotted the studios and unsubscribed from Disney+, with high-profile figures like Barack Obama speaking out against the silencing of media and abuse of power by the conservative powers.
Other Show Hosts Celebrate Jimmy Kimmel’s Return
On a Monday episode of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart shared the “wonderful news” and emphasized that Americans now have to “fight like hell” for their free speech. On the other hand, Ellen DeGeneres shared the news on Instagram, saying, “Cannot wait to hear @JimmyKimmel’s monologue tomorrow,” a sentiment shared widely by the public.
