(The Post News)- At least 14 people have been killed and 124 are still missing in Taiwan after Super Typhoon Ragasa busted the barrier lake, formed by previous landslides, on Tuesday, 23 September 2025, sending powerful water into the nearby township of Guangfu in Hualien County, according to regional officials.
The storm, reported to be the strongest to hit Taiwan in years, forced thousands to evacuate from their homes, shut down schools and businesses, and cancelled flights. According to the officials, “Most of the fatalities occurred in Guangfu when a barrier lake, formed by landslides from earlier rains, burst its banks and sent a wall of water rushing through the community.”
Premier Cho Jung-tai confirmed on Wednesday that over 14 people have died amid Typhoon Ragasa. “For the 14 who have tragically passed away, we must investigate why evacuation orders were not carried out in the designated areas. This is not about assigning blame but about uncovering the truth,” Cho said.
Authorities confirmed that 152 people remain missing, up from 129 earlier in the day. Police cars drove through Guangfu on Wednesday sounding sirens to warn of renewed flooding, sending people scrambling to safety.
