(The Post News)- Dame Patricia Routledge, the talented actress who played Hyacinth Bucket in the popular TV series Keeping Up Appearances, passed away at the age of 96.
She played the part of amateur investigator Hetty Wainthropp on BBC One and enthralled audiences with Alan Bennett’s television monologues all through the course of her life. She also had a successful theater career and received a lot of praise. She died calmly in her peaceful sleep that day, surrounded by love, her agent told the PA news agency on Friday.
She “made thousands joyful and left an impression that will forever be acknowledged with appreciation and respect,” according to the BBC’s comedy director, who paid honor to her. The BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, which ran from 1990 to 1995 and attracted up to 13 million viewers at its height, featured Dame Patricia as the renownedly arrogant Hyacinth Bucket. She was nominated for BAFTA in 1992 and 1993 for her acting skills.
She flourished in theater as well. Her performance as the Old Lady in Leonard Bernstein’s musical Candide earned her an Olivier Award in 1988. She had won a Tony Award twenty years prior for her portrayal of Alice Challice in the 1968 film Darling of the Day.
Keeping Up Appearances creator Roy Clarke expressed his sadness at her death and offered his sympathies. “It’s a stroke of luck to get your written work in the care of a talented actor,” he said, praising her talent. She was named a Dame Commander of the British Empire by Buckingham Palace in 2017 in recognition of her charitable and theatrical efforts.
After making her professional debut in London in 1954, Dame Patricia immediately became known as an outstanding performer. She also made an impression on Broadway, where she appeared in multiple plays and received accolades from New York critics for her work in How’s the World Treating You?
