(The Post News) – Residents of Orange Farm are in a state of anxiety as a result of a rise of deadly violence connected to a juvenile gang known as the “40’s and 50’s,” and they are worried about their safety. Local leaders have characterized the month-long spike in crime, which includes several stabbings and deaths, as an increasing crisis of teenage gang violence.
According to reports, the gang only consists of seven members, most of them are youths between the ages of 15 and 16. These young people are reportedly well-armed and regularly spotted on the streets wielding pangas and large knives. The normal neighbourhood sounds have been replaced with a persistent sense of dread as a result of their illegal activities, shattering the tranquillity.
The violence intensified last month, with three high-profile episodes that highlight the gang’s vicious tactics.
Recent Fatal Incidents
A few weeks ago, an Extension 7 homeowner was approached on his way home. The guys approached him and stabbed him several times before robbing him of his possessions. The attackers are accused of smashing his car, which was subsequently discovered abandoned, as a last act of devastation. Although the victim lived, the community is nonetheless psychologically scarred.
Sadly, the violence also took a life in Palm Springs, where the same group was implicated in the vicious murder of a young man.
Chaos and Recruitment
Compounding the community’s fear is the gang’s own internal volatility. Sources indicate that the 40′s have recently been involved in infighting, resulting in the deaths of some of their own members. This internal chaos has further demonstrated the reckless nature of the group.
Perhaps the most alarming development, according to concerned parents, is the increasing fear that school pupils are being actively targeted for recruitment.
Residents are calling on authorities for an immediate and effective intervention to reclaim the streets of Orange Farm.
