(The Post News) – A coroner’s court stated Thursday, at the start of an inquest into the death of former boxing world champion Ricky Hatton, that he was discovered deceased at his Greater Manchester residence after allegedly taking his own life.
Evidence given at Manchester South Coroner’s Court indicates that on September 14, his manager, Paul Speak, found the 46-year-old, dubbed “The Hitman,” unconscious. The discovery was described by police coroner’s officer Alison Catlow, who confirmed that hanging was the provisional cause of death.
On September 12, Hatton was last seen by his family, and he seemed to be in a cheerful mood. But when he didn’t show up for a planned event the following day, worries increased.
Tragically, Hatton was discovered unconscious by his manager when he arrived at his house early on September 14 to pick him up for a flight to Dubai, where he was supposed to go. They have postponed the inquest until March 20 of the next year.
Last week, thousands of friends and admirers flocked to Manchester’s streets to watch the cherished boxing legend’s funeral procession. Prominent individuals like former England footballer Wayne Rooney, Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, and world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury paid their respects at the service.
Hatton, a boxing champion in the light-welterweight and welterweight weight classes, had been candid about his mental health issues after retiring from the sport.
After leaving the sport, he struggled with alcoholism, drug addiction, and several suicide attempts, which he openly discussed in a 2016 television interview.
After making a brief appearance in 2022 for a demonstration fight versus Marco Antonio Barrera of Mexico, the British icon declared in July that he would return for official competition in Dubai in December.
