Aston Villa announced on Thursday that no away supporters will be allowed to attend their Europa League home match against Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv on November 6, following police concerns over potential protests and public safety.
The decision comes after demonstrations occurred during Israel’s recent World Cup qualifiers against Norway and Italy, where police used tear gas to disperse protesters in Oslo and Udine.
Villa said the ruling was made under the guidance of the Safety Advisory Group (SAG), the body responsible for granting safety certificates for matches at Villa Park and was based on several security considerations.
“After a meeting this afternoon, the SAG formally informed the club and UEFA that away fans will not be permitted for this fixture,” Villa stated.
According to the club, West Midlands Police expressed concerns about managing possible protests and maintaining public order outside the stadium.
Aston Villa added that they remain in ongoing discussions with Maccabi Tel Aviv and local authorities to ensure the safety of supporters and nearby residents remains the top priority
