(The Post News) – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has opened an attempted murder case following an apparent targeted attack on a vehicle belonging to Oupa “Brown” Mogotsi, a controversial North West businessman and political fixer, in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg last night.
A red VW Polo that Mogotsi was travelling in on Monday night allegedly came under a hail of bullets along the N3 highway. SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that it was Mogotsi’s vehicle that came under fire, although the full circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear as the investigation progresses.
Mathe further confirmed that Mogotsi has pledged to cooperate with the ongoing investigation. She said Mogotsi promised to avail himself at the police station to formally open a case and have his statement taken.
Critically, the spokesperson for the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, Jeremy Michaels has confirmed that Mogotsi is safe following the shooting.
Madlanga Commission Concerned over Witness Safety
Moreover, the attack has prompted swift security concerns from the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
Michaels expressed their deep worry not only for Mogotsi but for all individuals cooperating with the investigation.
He stated that, “The commission concerned about his [Mogotsi’s] safety and that of other witnesses to stand before the commission.”
He further assured the public that they are doing all they can to ensure their safety in light of the shooting.
Mogotsi’s Cooperation Crucial
While the SAPS has officially opened an attempted murder case, no details have been released regarding the number of shooters involved.
The cooperation of Brown Mogotsi, by providing a formal statement, is critical for the police to establish a clearer picture of the events, identify potential suspects, and proceed with the attempted murder charge.
