(The Post News)- Former Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) chief David Tembe has died. After being found unresponsive at his private residence on Sunday. He was declared dead at the scene by emergency services.
MMC for Public Safety Confirmed the Incident
Reports suggest Tembe was a strategic adviser to Dr Mgcini Tshwaku. He is the City of Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety. Tshwaku’s office confirmed the incident on Monday, 24 November 2025.

He added that the City was giving Tembe’s family space to process their loss. They would release further details once the post mortem results were available.
Mandlazi noted that Tembe had held several senior roles throughout his career. These roles included JMPD chief and head of department for Public Safety. He also served as the chief of the national traffic police and MMC for Public Safety.
JMPD Spokesperson Reports Tembe’s Death
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said police had not yet been formally notified of the incident. Meanwhile, JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla confirmed the department had received reports of Tembe’s death. He emphasised that Tembe was no longer in the employ of JMPD. Instead, Tembe was working in the MMC’s office.
In a statement issued later on Monday, MMC Tshwaku expressed deep sadness over the loss. “The City of Johannesburg Department of Public Safety is profoundly sad to announce the passing of Mr David Tembe.
“Mr Tembe is renowned for his community centred approach to policing. His unwavering commitment to officer welfare stands out. His relentless pursuit of safer streets is notable. Mr Tembe leaves an enduring legacy in the City’s ongoing fight against crime,” Tshwaku said.
The family reported that the funeral and memorial arrangements will be announced in due course.
