Mchunu grilled over sudden PKTT shutdown: 'Terrible rush' decision lacks clarity
(The Post News)- Police Minister Senzo Mchunu testified that President Cyril Ramaphosa was briefed on his decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), with the President noting the move. Mchunu met with Ramaphosa in January, providing a brief overview of the disbandment, citing concerns over duplication, inefficiency, and poor coordination within specialised investigative teams.
The PKTT was established in 2018 to tackle politically linked assassinations in KwaZulu-Natal, following the murder of an African National Congress (ANC) councilor. Mchunu’s decision to disband the team has sparked controversy, with critics questioning the timing and motivations behind the move.

Reasons for Disbandment
Mchunu defended his decision, stating that the PKTT’s responsibilities would be absorbed into broader policing structures. However, the commission investigating the disbandment has expressed concerns over potential compromises to active investigations and emboldening of criminal networks.
The President’s role in the disbandment remains unclear, with Mchunu stating that Ramaphosa agreed with his briefing, while others claim the President had praised the PKTT’s work. The controversy highlights tensions between the executive and police command structure, raising questions about governance and oversight.
