North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has ruled that Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s company, Medicare24 Tshwane District, must vacate its upscale Menlyn Maine Towers offices immediately. The company had fallen behind on rent, owing R258,890 in arrears.
Medicare24 Awarded R360 Million Tender
Medicare24 had secured a lucrative R360 million SAPS tender in 2024, but the contract was cancelled in May amidst allegations of corruption and bribery. The company’s troubles began when it stopped paying rent in June 2024, prompting the building’s management to take legal action.
Judge Colleen Collis granted Menlyn Maine Towers’ request for eviction, ordering Medicare24 and its occupants to leave the premises without delay. The court also authorized the sheriff to enforce the eviction, if necessary, with the assistance of the South African Police Service.
The ruling marks a significant setback for Matlala, who has been embroiled in a series of controversies surrounding his business dealings. Medicare24 had signed a five-year lease, but the landlord alleged that Matlala had breached the agreement by using the office space for another company and storing firearms on the premises.
Matlala’s arrest in May for attempted murder and other charges has further complicated his situation. The police had seized firearms registered to his security company, Cat VIP Protection, during a raid on his offices in December 2024.
The ongoing Madlanga Commission and a parliamentary committee have heard testimony implicating Matlala in a network of corruption and bribery within SAPS. Witnesses have claimed that Matlala acted as a “money tree,” doling out bribes to secure the R360 million tender.
Matlala has denied any wrongdoing, alleging that he is being targeted amid factional battles within the police force. He has labelled former police minister Bheki Cele an “extortionist,” claiming that Cele demanded R1 million after assisting him in retrieving items seized during the raid.
The eviction order marks a significant development in the ongoing saga, as Matlala’s empire faces increasing scrutiny.
Medicare24’s eviction is a major blow to Matlala’s operations, which have been plagued by allegations of corruption and misconduct. The company’s future hangs in the balance as it faces multiple investigations and legal challenges.
As the investigation into Matlala’s dealings continues, the police force is facing increased pressure to address allegations of corruption and misconduct. The outcome of the case will have significant implications for the future of SAPS and the fight against corruption in South Africa.
