Russia’s capital, Moscow, was struck by unknown unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on the morning of December 10, prompting a swift response from the Russian Defense Ministry’s air defense forces. According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, four drones attempting to breach Moscow’s airspace were successfully eliminated, with emergency services specialists dispatched to the sites of falling debris to ensure public safety.
Russia Destroy 20 Ukrainian Drones Overnight
The incident marks another in a series of drone attacks on Moscow, with the city experiencing similar incidents on December 9, where four drones were shot down by air defense forces. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that 20 Ukrainian drones were destroyed overnight, with 16 drones downed over the Bryansk region, two over Kaluga, one over Belgorod, and another over the Moscow region.
The drone attacks have caused disruptions, with flights diverted from Moscow’s main airports, including Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, and Domodedovo. Emergency crews were working to ensure the situation is under control, with no official reports of injuries or damage.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is preparing a revised peace settlement proposal to be sent to the U.S. negotiating team. The proposal includes a large-scale U.S. arms purchase program worth $100 billion, with Europe expected to finance it, and a separate $50 billion deal to produce drones in cooperation with Ukrainian companies.
Proposed US Peace Plan
The U.S. has proposed a peace plan, led by former President Donald Trump, which includes Ukraine recognizing Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk as “de facto Russian” territories. The plan also involves a ceasefire, troop withdrawals, and security guarantees for Ukraine.
Zelenskyy has expressed willingness to agree to an “energy truce” with Russia, pausing attacks on energy infrastructure by both nations. However, Russia’s continued strikes on Ukraine show that Moscow is not genuine in its professed interest in securing a peace settlement.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has resulted in significant human suffering, displacement, and economic losses. The international community has expressed concern over the escalating tensions, calling for restraint and dialogue to resolve the conflict peacefully.
The drone attack highlights the evolving nature of warfare, with drones becoming an increasingly important tool in modern conflict. The international community must work towards a peaceful resolution, ensuring the protection of human rights and dignity for all parties involved.
The U.S. peace plan has received mixed reactions, with some European leaders expressing concerns that it undermines EU accession and sovereignty. The plan’s success hinges on concessions neither side fully accepts.
Ukraine has rejected Russia’s proposal to freeze the front line in exchange for Ukraine pulling its troops from partially occupied territories. The Ukrainian government views the plan as creating a foothold for further Russian advances.
