A mass shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, has left two students dead and nine others injured, with the suspect still at large. The incident occurred on Saturday, December 13, 2025, during final exams at the Ivy League school.
Law Enforcement Personnel Deployed
Over 400 law enforcement personnel, including FBI and ATF agents, were deployed to search for the suspect, described as a male in his 30s wearing black clothing, possibly with a camouflage mask. The shooting happened in the Barus & Holley engineering building, where outer doors were unlocked during exams.
Brown University President Christina Paxson confirmed that all or nearly all victims were students. Seven of the nine wounded were listed as critical, according to Brown University Health. The injured were taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment.
The university was placed on lockdown, with students sheltering in place for hours. “This is the day one hopes never happens, and it has,” President Paxson said. Students described the scene as chaotic, with some hiding under desks for hours.

President Donald Trump Respond
Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee vowed to bring the shooter to justice, saying, “We’re going to make sure that we catch the individual that brought so much suffering to so many people.” President Donald Trump expressed his condolences, calling the incident “terrible”.
The search for the suspect was complicated by holiday crowds and events in the area. Police released security footage and urged witnesses to come forward with information. “Some tips have been coming in. We have been running them down,” Deputy Police Chief Timothy O’Hara said.
The shooting has sparked concerns about safety and gun violence in the US. The Gun Violence Archive reports 389 mass shootings in the US this year, including six at schools.
