Ukraine’s allies are meeting in Paris to finalize security guarantees for Kyiv in the event of a ceasefire with Russia. The meeting, attended by over 27 leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, aims to put together a common Ukrainian, European, and American position to present to Russia.
Talks to end the nearly four-year conflict have accelerated since November, but Russia’s willingness to accept current proposals remains uncertain, with territory being a key obstacle. Military officials, including Ukraine’s general staff head, are in Paris to solidify commitments, as previous pledges have been vague.
Security Guarantees for Ukraine
The meeting will focus on securing contributions to a multinational force for Ukraine and agreeing on security guarantees, including binding commitments if Ukraine is attacked again. Efforts will be made to coordinate planning with Ukraine, the US, and Europe.
Zelenskiy emphasized that Ukraine is preparing for both diplomacy and further active defense if pressure on Russia proves insufficient. He stated, “Ukraine wants peace”.
A French presidency official said they have reached agreement on operational details of security guarantees and will explain the structure and need for long-term commitment. A senior European official hopes firming up the coalition’s guarantees will cement US commitments.
The Coalition of the Willing, led by France and the UK, aims to provide security guarantees, including potential military presence in Ukraine. Zelenskiy stressed that British and French military presence is mandatory for peace.
The meeting is part of broader efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, with Ukraine seeking EU membership and NATO-like security guarantees. The situation remains fluid, with concerns about Russia’s intentions and the effectiveness of negotiations.
