The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature has expressed its full support for AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s call to rename the KwaZulu-Natal Province to KwaZulu. The party believes that this call is both timely and historically justified, given the longstanding historical distortion that has affected the Zulu Kingdom.
AmaZulu King Misuzulu’s Call Resonates with IFP’s Stance
King Misuzulu made this call during the 147th edition of the Battle of Isandlwana, held in Nquthu in the north of the province last Thursday. He announced that he would start a campaign to remove the name Natal, citing the need to acknowledge the Zulu Kingdom’s profound historical, cultural, and political significance.
Historical Context: CODESA Negotiations and KwaZulu
IFP Chief Whip of the KZN Legislature, Blessed Gwala, stated that the party’s position is vindicated by the King’s proposal. Gwala noted that during the Convention for a Democratic South Africa (CODESA) negotiations in the early 1990s, there was intense debate over the renaming of provinces, particularly Natal. The IFP consistently advocated for the recognition of KwaZulu, acknowledging the Zulu Kingdom’s historical and cultural significance.
Addressing Historical Distortions: IFP’s Stance
Gwala added that the IFP believes King Misuzulu’s call opens the door to addressing other long-standing historical distortions. The party’s stance is rooted in the understanding that the demarcation of provinces resulted in the loss of many parts of KwaZulu, which were placed under other provinces.
KwaZulu-Natal Renaming: A Historical Correction
The IFP’s support for King Misuzulu’s call is based on the party’s long-held position that the province’s name should reflect its historical and cultural heritage. The party believes that renaming the province to KwaZulu would be a step towards correcting historical distortions and acknowledging the Zulu Kingdom’s significance.
