(The Post News)- On Saturday, July 20, the 2024 Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and Television Awards celebrated South African talent in a memorable event held at the Playhouse in Durban.
The evening, which took place in partnership with KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and the Film Authority, honoured creators and storytellers from KwaZulu-Natal for their contributions to the screen.
The awards ceremony has been going on for 11 years and was launched in 2013 to honour the role of the late Simon Sabela in the South African television and film industry.
This year’s event was hosted by the dynamic Nomalanga Shozi and Nokwazi, an isiZulu-speaking virtual assistant who entertained both Shozi and the guests.
Among the major winners at the 2024 Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and Television Awards were Melusi Yeni, who won the award for Best Supporting Actor in TV.
The former Generations actor celebrated his win and expressed his gratitude for the recognition.
“I want to express my appreciation for the reminder that I am indeed a part of this community of storytellers, and the work I have done over the years is acknowledged and appreciated,” he said.
“It means the most to me to receive this award in KZN, which I love. Thank you so much,” Melusi said.
The late Dr. Mbongeni Ngema, Mpho Sebeng, and others who have passed away and left an indelible mark on the South African television and film industries were honoured.
Ngema, a playwright, lyricist, composer, director, choreographer, and theatre producer, died in December, while Sebring, an actor who appeared in “Ring of Lies” and “Savage Beauty,” died in May.
The Mzansi Magic drama series Shaka Ulembe won three awards, which were won by Thembinkosi Mthembu for Best Television Actor for his role as Dingiswayo, Ziya Xulu for Best Young Actress, and Dylan Lloyd for Best Production Design.
Deli Malinga won the Best Actress TV award, Masoja Msiza won the Best Actor Film Award, and Jo-Anne Reyneke won the Best Actress Film Award.
The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to actress Cynthia Shange.
KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority interim chief executive Sibusiso Gumbi said he was proud of all the winners and nominees who continue to raise the bar and push the boundaries of creativity.
“These awards are a testament to the immense talent and incredible influence of our filmmakers and television professionals in KwaZulu-Natal, a province with breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture,” he said.
“In this celebration of artistic eminence, we cannot disregard the invaluable role played by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism, and Environment and its agencies in promoting South Africa’s film industry to the global stage,” said Gumbi.
“KwaZulu-Natal, with its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture, remains a popular film location, attracting filmmakers and tourists.
