(The Post News)- Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has appealed for an end to the ongoing protests, which have been fueled by soaring living costs and fuel prices, resulting in multiple fatalities. In a televised address, Tinubu acknowledged the protesters’ grievances, particularly among the youth, and reassured them that his administration is committed to addressing their concerns.
The protests, which began last week, have disrupted the country’s supply chain, particularly in transportation, and have led to clashes with police officials, resulting in loss of life. The military has also threatened to intervene to halt the violence.
Protesters are demanding reduced petrol and electricity rates, among other economic relief measures. However, President Tinubu defended his economic reforms, including subsidy cuts and currency depreciation, as necessary to address past economic mismanagement.
Despite the president’s call for calm, citizens continue to express their opinions on social media, with some arguing that the reforms have already caused harm and should be halted, while others feel the measures are ineffective and fail to address the protesters’ concerns.
The protests, which lasted from Thursday to Sunday, have claimed lives and sparked tensions across the country. The military’s threat to intervene has added to the uncertainty, leaving many to wonder if President Tinubu’s plea will be enough to calm the storm of protests.
